Might not be the best place to ask but ask I will. Are hares edible in Canada? I live in Spruce Grove AB and would like to start hunting. I figure hares would be a good starting point.

You are at the right place for sure to ask a question like that. Hare and cottontail are indeed edible in Canada and in La belle province of Quebec where I hunt they are known for their great rabbit stews. The hares I have eaten were always very lean, with not a lot of meat but they were good. I also take precautions when it comes to Tularemia or Rabbit fever and ring worm but you can tell if a rabbit is sick once you harvest it. I always wear latex gloves in case I cut myself during the field dressing stage. Once you get out hunting, I would really appreciate it if you would share your stories and knowledge as well. Hare is a great starting point for sure. You are very lucky too because in Alberta you can hunt the white tailed Jack rabbit all year round. Check out the link below:
